Josiah Gray finishes the season strong!

The weather last night in Maryland matched the mood after the passing of legend Brooks Robinson was announced. Josiah Gray had to face a Baltimore team that he almost beat in April when he held them to one-run and lost 1-0. He was playing the shadows of M&T Bank Stadium where his favorite football team plays. Few Orioles fans are probably aware that Gray regularly dons his Lamar Jackson jersey. In a case of déjà vu, Gray lost again by a score of 1-0 against the O’s this season just like he did on April 18, 2023. His season finished with a 3.91 ERA, and ranked him 61st on FanGraphs for starting pitchers with at least 90 innings, and 82nd in WAR although that’s a cumulative number. Suffice it to say that the Nats lone All-Star is a solid No. 3 starter on a good staff. Fair enough.

Game #158 Josiah Gray’s final start of 2023

Photo by Marlene Koenig for TalkNats

The Washington Nationals have a quick two-game series in Baltimore as part of their final five games of 2023. Josiah Gray, the team’s All-Star, gets the start tonight, his final start of 2023 — and Joan Adon on Sunday with Jackson Rutledge on Saturday in Atlanta — with a final start for Trevor Williams on Friday is the plan. All of this from manager Dave Martinez who disclosed this today as the weekend plan.

Final homestand thoughts on the Washington Nationals for the future

Last year, manager Dave Martinez and G.M. Mike Rizzo spoke at a function for season ticket holders called the Ballpark Bash. There was an open mic, and they got grilled as the team finished with a Washington Nationals’ worst 107 losses. This year, there was no Ballpark Bash, and the pair avoided a grilling by those that pay to watch the team. It is ironic that fans ask tougher questions than the media. Instead, the team did a full-team autograph session this year for their season plan holders, and the Ballpark Bash looks to have been a one-and-done. As normal, Rizzo and Martinez did meet with the media for a traditional year-end homestand colloquy that was certainly more upbeat than last year.

Milestone reached: Lane Thomas goes 20/20

The 2023 season has seen a few Washington Nationals emerge as players with the potential to get this team to postseason contention in the future. This is what rebuilds are all about in finding those players who will be parts of the future. Lane Thomas and CJ Abrams are two of those special players. Both competing to get to the prestigious 20/20 Club, Thomas needed one more stolen base which he got last night. Abrams is still vying for membership if he can crush two more home runs.

Game #157 Nats go for doubleheader sweep

The Washington Nationals picked up a much needed win in this first game of this doubleheader to get to 69-wins on the season and tie the mark the team had in 2010. There is significance to that because then-owner, Ted Lerner, expanded payroll after the season and signed Jayson Werth. Of course with six more games to go, the Nats are looking to win 75 games.

Game #156 The final sprint to the finish line

The Washington Nationals schedule keeps getting interrupted by Mother Nature as a tropical storm doused the area in two days of steady rain. Yesterday’s game was wisely cancelled two days ago, and that led to a doubleheader scheduled for today. The rain has not disappeared off of the radar just yet, but the hope is that the Nats and Braves can get in this pair of games today. Who knew that Washington, D.C. was in a rainforest? Over 25 percent of gamedays this season have been impacted by the weather.

The real Nats’ MVP for this team is ______!

Last season, the Washington Nationals named Lane Thomas as their Player of the Year, and yesterday the team announced that he earned that honor again for this season. Certainly after the trade of Jeimer Candelario with his .823 OPS and the injury of Stone Garrett with his .801 OPS, it would be a battle between Thomas and CJ Abrams for the team’s POY or as some call it — the MVP. If you go by BBRef, they have Abrams with the edge at a +3.6 WAR over Thomas with a +3.3 WAR. By FanGraphs’ calculation of WAR, Candelario is STILL the team’s WAR leader at +3.1 with Thomas at +2.7 and Abrams at +2.4. Yes, WAR is a formula that differs in the calculation at every turn. There is no standard in the WAR calculation.

Game #155 Nats looking for a bounceback win

Yesterday, the Washington Nationals held their crossover night with the Washington Commanders at Nationals Park. It was a show of unity of the two most prominent teams in the DMV. Last night, it was Patrick Corbin, who caught the ceremonial first pitch, from Commanders’ owner Josh Harris. Tonight, Corbin takes the mound to get a win for his Nats’ team after they were crushed by the Braves’ relentless offense last night.

Game #154 It is Commanders crossover night

The Washington Nationals won a series they needed to win, and took the series yesterday from the White Sox. Today, the Nats will begin a 4-game scheduled series (weather permitting) against the best team in MLB, the Atlanta Braves. Tonight is Commanders Night in the Capital Crossover event that is a great thing for sports in the D.C. area. Never have the teams done anything like the before. Hopefully it will be an annual event going forward. The Commanders will hold their crossover night in two weeks at FedEx Field when they take on the Bears in a Thursday night game. Special crossover tickets are available for both games.

The significance of the Nats getting 1, 2, or even 5 more wins!

Looks can be deceiving for these 2023 Washington Nationals. The team currently has a 68-win season, and that would generally be considered to be a failure for several teams — but for a rebuilding team that only won 55-games last year — this is a significant improvement. The Nats have exceeded even the most optimistic computer generated projections of 65-67 wins from FanGraphs modeling, while Vegas set their over/under for 58.5 wins at several sportsbooks. And guess what, the Nats have nine more games to play this season (weather permitting) to better that record.
