Scherzer tunes up for Opening Day

Today might feel like a playoff game with Max Scherzer and Adam Wainwright pitching for their respective teams today as we head into the final week of baseball in Florida. The Cardinals travel to Viera for this matchup of Aces.

There is also one change with Danny Espinosa. He said that the Viera batter’s eye is an issue for him so he will only play in the road games. Trea Turner will start in his place today.

Here’s today’s batting order:

  1. Trea Turner SS
  2. Daniel Murphy 2B
  3. Bryce Harper RF
  4. Ryan Zimmerman 1B
  5. Jayson Werth LF
  6. Anthony Rendon 3B
  7. Michael A. Taylor CF
  8. Wilson Ramos C
  9. Max Scherzer P

Yes, there is no DH today as Scherzer bats for himself, and don’t be surprised if Max is bunting even with bases empty.

This game will be carried on the radio with the MLB App. Start time is 1:05pm in Viera.

Coaching up players is another of baseball’s intangibles

How many wins is Dusty Baker worth? How many wins is Mike Maddux worth? There is absolutely no way of really knowing a WAR value for a manager or a coach. Some have tried to quantify a manager’s WAR, and most have failed because when they apply the formula to all managers it doesn’t make sense applying one formula to all. Some say the baseball pythagorean is the way to evaluate a manager and others say it is the W/L record in 1 run games and extra inning games that will tell you a manager’s value.

A coach should put their players in the best position to succeed and add value to their team. There are also those times where the baseball manager makes a good decision that goes awry because the player does not execute, and the opposite is true where the baseball manager makes a bad decision that goes well because the player does execute.

Players make their managers look good, bad and ugly—they also get managers fired. Dusty has been fired from 3 jobs, and says “you’re hired to be fired.” The strange thing about Dusty was that he got fired after taking the 2002 San Francisco Giants team to the World Series, and in 2013, Dusty took the Reds to the post-season and got fired. Usually you don’t see a manager let go after a playoff run, but look no further than Davey Johnson who made it to the ALCS in 1997 and claims he was fired, and last year Mattingly parted ways with the Dodgers.  Go figure.

Try to think of another manager and coaching staff who have coached up their players as much as we hear about this staff. The pitchers talk about Maddux, the runners speak of Lopes, the batters speak of the triumvirate of Schu, Jacque Jones and Dusty. Then you have a leadership of fellow players who help each other as a culture now exists to promote this exchange between players.

The Nats and Dusty are in the honeymoon period now and will move to the newlywed period on April 4th, and as we graphically showed, Dusty’s newlywed seasons with his new teams show improvement over the prior year.

Dusty Chart

Dusty credits many people for his managerial success and speaks often of the influence of football coach Bill Walsh. Dusty does not shy away from his desire to win a World Series as a manager and get enshrined in the baseball Hall of Fame.

Analysts look to the value of a manager’s in-game strategy and decisions, and with Dusty and his coaching staff we must give value to the preparation of his players.

Coaching up players is another of baseball’s intangibles, and while we cannot give a formula or a value to it, we are seeing it, hearing about it, and reading about it.

UPDATED: Giolito sent to MiLB Camp! The Yankees travel to Viera as Tanaka and Strasburg face-off 5:05pm 3/23/16

UPDATED 2:20PM: Lucas Giolito was reassigned to Minor League camp. It was was expected to happen but we hoped later than sooner.  Giolito left a lasting impression with a dominant pitching performance against the Mets “A” team. Nats fans will have to wait a little longer to see Gio Grande pitch with the Nats “A” team again.

There are just 12 days remaining before Opening Day, and the Nats enjoyed a rare Spring off-day yesterday with some light workouts and golf, and some barbeques. The Yankees will make their one trip to Viera as they go from the Gulf side in Tampa Florida to the Atlantic Coast side in Viera.  The bus ride according to Google is 2 hours 4 minutes for the 132.5 mile journey, and that is without hitting traffic on Route 4 eastbound while averaging a driving speed of 63.86mph. Note: That seems like a high rate of speed on Fiske Blvd and Stadium Parkway.

Bowden and Memolo talk about the #Nats and #Mets

March 20, 2016 MLB Network Radio on Sirius/XM with Jim Bowden and Jim Memolo discussing the Mets and Nationals;
transcribed by VirginiaScopist (many thanks)

MEMOLO:  (In progress) ‑ and so here’s your alignment to do that.

BOWDEN:  Yeah.  I mean, look, it absolutely ‑ it makes sense what they’re trying to do here.  It makes sense logically.  “Does it work” is an expression.

You know, I’m a Juan Lagares guy, so you’re talking the wrong person here.  I think if Juan Lagares played every day, he’s going to hit a lot more than people think, and I think he’s got a chance to win the Gold Glove in center field every year that he plays.  He’s that good defensively.

Now, when I look at the Nationals ‑ the Mets better be scared.  You know, they better not walk around saying, “This is our division.”  The Nationals have a really good team! And, they’re really healthy and, oh, by the way, they’re 12 and 3 in spring training games.  And I’m telling you, it’s a really good team.  It’s the team we thought they were going to have a year ago.  I’m just ‑ I’m just going to tell you straight out, people better understand it.

Trea Turner is better than any standard stats show #Nats

After the Nats traded for Ben Revere, Steve M. dove into the deep end to look past traditional Slugging % and OPS and even OBP to try to make sense of the greater value for these speed demon players like Revere and Turner in an attempt to give them credit for the speed game. A steal equals an extra base just like a double compared to a single and a caught stealing gets removed from the On-Base-Percentage as if the runner was never on base: Speed is the part of the game that is the hidden intangible

Here is what Steve M. came up with for his theory with Ben Revere:

“Strategy” With the Rotation: Dusty and His Staff Have Some Interesting Options in the First Two Weeks

Although it doesn’t sound like it’s official yet, Dusty seems to have decided that Max will pitch on Opening Day against the Braves in Atlanta, and Stras will get the home opener on April 7 against the Marlins.  That means Gio is the likely starter of our second game against the Braves.

#Nats host #Astros in Viera as Gio G. starts

Gio Gonzalez was excused from camp for a few days as his fiancée Léa gave birth to their first child, a son, named Enzo which is a name shared with the great Enzo Ferrari. Well wishes to the Gonzalez family. One special note about Gio’s fiancée Léa is that she was very excited about the Maryland Terps basketball win last night as she is an alumna of the University of Maryland where she received her degree in economics. Gio was also happy that his favorite team, University of Miami, also advanced in the NCAA tournament. Continue reading

The 6th Man is en fuego for the #Nats

Michael A. Taylor will turn 25 years old this week, and he is turning heads in Florida as opposing players have watched and turned their heads to see MAT bombs leave the stadium 3 times so far this Spring. While those home runs might be impressive to lead the Nationals this Spring, his stat-line with a .484 Batting Average would freeze Ted Williams head without cryogenics.

Michael Taylor Stats 3 20 16

Dusty Baker has said that Michael A. Taylor will see “a lot of playing time” and also gave a basketball analogy to say MAT is like his “6th man” which is a key man off the bench, and a player who could start on almost any other team. Sometimes the 6th man becomes the starter like James Harden (the beard of the Houston Rockets) and Jamal Crawford who were both 6th Man of the Year Award winners. In fact Jamal Crawford won the award twice!

You can expect Jayson Werth to start on April 4th for Opening Day this year, but there are not any guarantees that say Werth will be the primary starter if he doesn’t prove to be the best leftfielder on this Washington Nationals team, and we anticipate Ben Revere will get some rest days when lefties are on the mound as we’ve written before that Dusty will platoon at the right time.

The rain-out changes Dusty’s entire plan for today. Nats travel far to Joker Marchant

The Nats are on their way to Lakeland, Florida to play the Detroit Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium at 1:05pm. Yusmeiro Petit was supposed to start today and due to yesterday’s rain-out, Joe Ross will now start the game versus Justin Verlander.

Also, the Nats projected Opening Day starters will make the trip and all will be in exactly what was predicted for Opening Day here last night with the stacked lefties that Dusty seems to favor against RHPs:

  1. Ben Revere CF
  2. Daniel Murphy 2B
  3. Bryce Harper RF
  4. Ryan Zimmerman 1B
  5. Jayson Werth LF
  6. Anthony Rendon 3B
  7. Wilson Ramos C
  8. Danny Espinosa SS
  9. Tyler Moore DH

Two weeks from Monday is Opening Day! Stats today, gone tomorrow! #Nats

There are 21 position players still on the roster in Spring Training. The stats (below) say that if Michael A. Taylor could stay at this pace the entire season he will be MVP and break many records, and that is just not reality. Spring Training stats have very little reflection on what will happen in the regular season; however, let us give Michael A. Taylor credit that he has come into camp ready to play. Dusty Baker made a basketball analogy and called Taylor ‘his 6th man’ which is a strong compliment.
