The Washington Nationals continued one of their best starting rotation turns of the season that now has spanned six starts with a 3-3 record in that span. DJ Herz had two of the starts and has gone 10 2/3 IP 2 ER, Mitchell Parker 7.0 IP 1 ER, Patrick Corbin 6.0 IP 1 ER, MacKenzie Gore 6.0 IP 1 ER, Jake Irvin 5 1/3 2 ER. That is 35.0 combined innings of 7 earned run baseball for a 1.80 ERA.
With the pitching humming, the Nats have the New York Yankees at Nationals Park for a 3-game series, and tonight officially marks the call-up of Dylan Crews for his MLB Debut. He will officially wear jersey No. 3. Both teams have some mighty star power with Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, CJ Abrams, James Wood and Crews.
To commemorate the Crews debut, the Nationals are giving away 10,000 t-shirts with Crews on the shirt. The team did the same for the Wood debut. This should be a sold-out crowd tonight.
In order to make room on the active roster for Crews, the Nationals kept catcher Drew Millas who was called up on Saturday and optioned catcher Riley Adams to Triple-A. Rosters expand on Sunday, and we will see two more moves as the roster expands to 28-players.
Based on last year’s win total of 71-games, the Nats need to go 13-18 or better to beat that total. To beat the 66-win total from FanGraphs, the Nats need to win 8 more games. There are just 31-games remaining in the season, and the rest of this season is really supposed to help to determine the players who could help impact the 2025 roster.
The Nats are underdogs today, at +155 to win on the moneyline. That means if you bet $100 you would win $155. Bet $10.00 and you win $15.50.
Nats’ manager Dave Martinez used Kyle Finnegan for 1 1/3 innings to earn the save. His outing would have been more efficient if not for a 2-out error in the 9th inning. Still, Finnegan got the job done. Eduardo Salazar pitched some Hi Lev innings for the hold.
This is what the Nats schedule looks like going forward:
- Monday: Mitchell Parker vs. Yankees
- Tuesday: Patrick Corbin vs. Yankees
- Wednesday: MacKenzie Gore vs. Yankees
- Thursday: Day-Off August 29
- Friday: Jake Irvin vs. Cubs
- Saturday: DJ Herz vs. Cubs
- Sunday: Parker vs. Cubs
- Monday: Day-Off September 2
- Tuesday: Corbin vs. Marlins
- Wednesday: Gore vs. Marlins
Your top Washington Nationals on the FanGraphs’ WAR leaderboard has Luis Garcia Jr. atop of the WAR rankings at +3.0, Jacob Young at +2.5 and CJ Abrams at +2.1. In total, 27 Nats’ players are in positive WAR and another seven are at a neutral 0.0 WAR.
“That’s a stepping stone for us. Teams that we play, they always say the same thing that, ‘You guys play hard. You just don’t give up.’ That’s a good thing. Now we’ve just got to understand how in some of these close games — how to finish games, and get that extra run. When we do that, we’re going to be fine. I’m seeing some really good things, especially from our young guys.”
— Nats’ manager Dave Martinez said after yesterday’s game
