The Washington Nationals lost another 1-run game (10-14 on the season), and that is how the series ended in St. Louis. For the next 3-days, the Nats are in Arizona to face the reigning NL Champs.
We are just 1-day to the trade deadline, and the 24-hour countdown starts at 6pm EDT tonight. This trade deadline has taken over all the buzz right now in NatsTown, especially since all of the draft picks signed except their Round 20 pick because that player chose to remain in college. As we sourced on Saturday, Yoel Tejada had signed — and the Nats made that official today.
As the hours get closer to the trade deadline, we expect reliever Dylan Floro to be traded, and two of the most coveted players rumored to be in demand are closer Kyle Finnegan and outfielder Lane Thomas. Everyone continues to be on hug-watch and scouring their social media for news breaking on trades. Will the Nats surprise us? So far, general manager Mike Rizzo has traded Hunter Harvey and Jesse Winker.
Nats’ manager Dave Martinez‘s bullpen got pushed some on Sunday with Derek Law, Robert Garcia, and Dylan Floro giving length. Jose A. Ferrer got the day off as he took the bulk of the work on Saturday with Eduardo Salazar, and Tanner Rainey. Closer Kyle Finnegan pitched on Friday along with Jacob Barnes. If Rainey can continue to pitch well, the bullpen assignments can spread the work better among eight pitchers instead of 5-or-6 like we saw before the All-Star break.
The Nationals are deep underdogs today, at +140 to win on the moneyline. That means if you bet $100 you would win $140. Bet $10.00 and you win $14.00.
This is what the Nats schedule looks like going forward:
- Monday: Mitchell Parker vs. Arizona
- Tuesday: Patrick Corbin vs. Arizona (Trade Deadline)
- Wednesday: MacKenzie Gore vs. Arizona
- Thursday: Day-Off
- Friday: Jake Irvin vs. Brewers
- Saturday: DJ Herz vs. Brewers
- Sunday: Parker vs. Brewers
Your top Washington Nationals on the FanGraphs’ WAR leaderboard got a surprise today as Jacob Young (+2.0 WAR) took over the top spot for Nats’ position players in WAR. Young has a narrow lead over CJ Abrams. In total, 24 Nats’ players are in positive WAR and another six are at a neutral 0.0 WAR.
“Overall, I can’t be disappointed, because we played really well this series, to a really good team, too. We’ve just got to come back tomorrow and try to go 1-0.”
