Game #103 Salvage game against the Padres

The Washington Nationals will have just 59-games remaining in the 2024 season after today. For the Padres, this is their sprint to the finish, and the Nats would like to spoil their day with a salvage win.

We are just 5-days to the trade deadline, and the front office is finishing up the signing of their draft picks with the huge signing today of second round pick Luke Dickerson.

A poor start by Mitchell Parker put Nats’ manager Dave Martinez in a tough spot to have to cover 5.0 innings with his normal bullpen, and his secret weapon — Ildemaro Vargas who closed out the game with a zero. Jordan Weems who seemed under-worked just had nothing and was bombed for 5-runs in just 1.0 inning. Jacob Barnes covered 2.0 innings and the bulk of the work. Tanner Rainey and Dylan Floro each took an inning.

Bullpen usage

The Nationals are the deep underdogs today, at +140 to win on the moneyline. That means if you bet $100 you would win $140. Bet $10.00 and you win $14.00.

This is what the Nats schedule looks like going forward:

  1. Thursday: Patrick Corbin vs. San Diego
  2. Friday: MacKenzie Gore vs. St. Louis
  3. Saturday: Jake Irvin vs. St. Louis
  4. Sunday: DJ Herz vs. St. Louis
  5. Monday: Mitchell Parker vs. Arizona
  6. Tuesday: Corbin vs. Arizona (Trade Deadline)
  7. Wednesday: Gore vs. Arizona
  8. Thursday: Day-Off

Your top Washington Nationals on the FanGraphs’ WAR leaderboard has CJ Abrams on the top at +2.0 for position players and the team’s All-Star. He is behind MacKenzie Gore at +2.4. Jake Irvin is at +1.9. Luis Garcia Jr. and Jacob Young are tied at +1.8 as the second best position players. In total, 23 Nats’ players are in positive WAR and another seven are at a neutral 0.0 WAR.

“[Josiah Gray] had a reconstruction. He’s going to miss time, as we all know, but he’s doing well. He feels good about it.”
