Game #102 Can the Nats beat the Padres?

The Washington Nationals still have not won against the San Diego Padres in a game this year. Sure, the Nats have the last laugh with CJ Abrams, MacKenzie Gore, and James Wood all coming over in the Juan Soto trade with the Padres, plus indirectly Keibert Ruiz came over in the Trea Turner trade with the Dodgers, and Turner was once acquired by the Nats in a blockbuster trade with the Padres. Additionally in the minor leagues the Nats have Jarlin Susana and Robert Hassell III as the other two players acquired from the Padres in the Soto trade.

We are now just six days before the 2024 trade deadline, and everyone wants to know if general manager Mike Rizzo will trade more of his players. Everyone is on “hug” watch.

The Nationals recalled LHP DJ Herz yesterday, and he did his job going 5.0 innings of 2-run baseball. But that also meant the Nats had to cover 4.0 innings from the bullpen. Manager Dave Martinez is now back to 8-pitchers in his bullpen. He used Jose A. Ferrer, Robert Garcia, Tanner Rainey, Derek Law, and Jacob Barnes yesterday.

The Nationals are the slight favorites today, at -110 to win on the moneyline. That means if you bet $110 you would win $100. Bet $11.00 and you win $10.00.

This is what the Nats schedule looks like going forward:

  1. Wednesday: Mitchell Parker vs. San Diego
  2. Thursday: Patrick Corbin vs. San Diego
  3. Friday: MacKenzie Gore vs. St. Louis
  4. Saturday: Jake Irvin vs. St. Louis
  5. Sunday: DJ Herz vs. St. Louis

Your top Washington Nationals on the FanGraphs’ WAR leaderboard has CJ Abrams on the top at +2.1 for position players and the team’s All-Star. He is behind MacKenzie Gore at +2.4. Jake Irvin is at +1.9. Jacob Young is at +1.8 as the second best position player. In total, 23 Nats’ players are in positive WAR and another eight are at a neutral 0.0 WAR.

“We hit some balls hard, but we just couldn’t get any good swings off. We swung the bats today, but we really didn’t work good at-bats.”

— Nats’ manager Dave Martinez said after yesterday’s game
