The Washington Nationals had to overcome a troublesome 2.0 inning start from MacKenzie Gore (3 R), and a 2-run deficit, in what turned out to be a Nats’ come-from-behind win, their 26th of the season which tied them for the most in MLB. The Nats won 5-4.
The Nats star of the game was Jacob Young who scored two runs, stole two bases, played perfect defense, and knocked in the game-winning run in the 8th inning. He got a Gatorade bath courtesy of Jesse Winker for a quick cooldown after the game in front of over 32,700 fans. Harold Ramirez hit a 2-run homer, and the bullpen covered 7.0 innings with only giving up 1-run. Closer, Kyle Finnegan, had to face the Reds best hitters to earn his 27th save.
As for today, it is Jake Irvin on the mound. His last two starts might have cost him an All-Star selection. Now he has to show he is the ace of this team.
We are now exactly 9-days before the 2024 trade deadline, and everyone wants to know if general manager Mike Rizzo will trade more of his players or wait a little bit longer in case his team can go on a miraculous run. His team has now won 4-of-their-last-5 games. Not exactly a spectacular run — but let’s see if this team can go on a long winning streak.
As mentioned, manager Dave Martinez had to cover 7.0 innings with his bullpen last night. Dylan Floro and Derek Law covered 2.0 innings each, and it was Kyle Finnegan for the save. Jordan Weems and Robert Garcia covered an inning each. Remember, the Nats are utilizing a 9-man bullpen with just 4-starters for now, and have a day-off tomorrow.
The Nationals are the slight betting favorites today, at -115 to win on the moneyline. That means if you bet $115 you would win $100. Bet $11.50 and you win $10.00.
