The Washington Nationals are mired in a 4-game losing streak where they lost these games by an average of 1 1/2 runs per game. Each game seems to have one mistake you can circle as the reason for the loss. They say you lose as a team, and it is never about one play. Everything still seems to go back to the start of this losing streak when the Nats held a 2-run lead in the 9th inning and blew the save via a Marlins’ walk-off home run.
In manager Dave Martinez‘s postgame presser last night, he did not look to be his normal self, and the pressure might be getting to him. Remember, Martinez is on the final four months of his contract — unless he receives an extension.
“[Saturday], we’ve got to come out ready to play — from the first pitch on.”
— manager Dave Martinez was not happy
The Nats starters have a combined ERA of 4.47 for 16th best in MLB.
The team now has to figure out if Jake Irvin is viable in this rotation after getting bombed in his last 3 1/3 innings for 10 earnies. By the way, in his previous 14 2/3 innings of his MLB career, Irvin only gave up one-run to the tune of a 0.61 ERA.
Here is how they rank:
No. 5 Starter: Jake Irvin 5.50 ERA
No. 4 Starter: Patrick Corbin 4.65
No. 3 Starter: Trevor Williams 4.26
No. 2 Starter: MacKenzie Gore 3.69
No. 1 Starter: Josiah Gray 2.73
The Nats have Patrick Corbin on the mound against the Tigers. The team from Detroit has right-hander Alex Faedo as their starter. Clearly, Corbin must be the stopper that the Nats need.
