The Nats’ player development hires and restructure is complete!

With all of the new hires on the player development side and also in the front office in the analytics department, the obvious question is: Why did it take so long? From the lowest rated minor league system just a year ago, the 2021 sell-off along with the 2021 draft and international signings has added enough quality in prospects that MLB Pipeline ranked the Nats as their 20th ranked farm system. While not great, it is a huge improvement to be in the top two-thirds now. Of course this was not done on internal player development, rather just adding new players to the system. Just this week, another former Nats’ first round pick made headlines for the wrong reason as Seth Romero was reportedly arrested in Texas on a DUI. Part of the system’s issue is player development, but they have also made some poor choices in draft picks over the years. The job ahead for this new group is to develop star players from within. That is the challenge, and one that has been devoid in this Nats system, forever, if you remove their Top-6 signings (Stephen Strasburg, Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon) in their Draft history as well as Juan Soto from the international signings; otherwise, it has been a poor track record. That needed to change and hopefully today marks a new era in the history of the Nationals with the reorganization and new hires.

The Washington Nationals made it official with their 2022 Minor League Player Development staff in an announcement today. The team’s President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo and Director of Player Development De Jon Watson made the joint announcement.

“We are incredibly excited to announce our expanded player development staff,” said Watson. “We added 14 new roles and brought in more than 20 new staff members to the system. This group boasts a wealth of playing and coaching experience at both the Minor League and Major League level. The expanded resources throughout the system ensure that our players will have everything they need to develop, improve and prepare themselves for the next level.”

Maybe the most significant move was adding “Developmental Coaches” at each minor league level. These are coaches who will work alongside the manager and coaching staff. Throughout the listing of personnel, you will notice some familiar names like Hood who was a top prospect for years in the Nats’ system but unfortunately never developed into the star player they had hoped for. He was a football star that the team convinced to play baseball. He eventually made it to the majors with other teams. Joel Hanrahan, a former closer for the Nats and an All-Star for the Pirates is back with the team as the Low-A Fredericksburg Nats’ pitching coach, and Delwyn Young will be joining him as the hitting coach. Young was a player for the Nats in their minor league system in 2013. Young and Hanrahan were teammates with the Pirates in 2009-2010. This is a good note on Hanrahan here.

Many other familiar names are in new roles like Joe Dillon as the team’s hitting coordinator who is back with team, and Michael Tejera as the Lower Level Pitching Coordinator. You will notice that there is plan in-place for a more hands-on approach so coaches are not spread so thin. Coco Crisp joins the team as their Outfield/Baserunning Coordinator, and his former Red Sox teammate, Bill Mueller, will be the Quality Control Coordinator.

You will also notice an emphasis on the medical and nutrition side with many new hires that are beefed up from former levels. Mark Grater will be the Rehabilitation Pitching Coordinator with Gene Basham as the Medical Rehab Coordinator and Jeff Allred as his assistant. Gabe Torres will be the Strength and Conditioning Coordinator and Cesar Roman the Athletic Trainer.

Dana Sinclair is the new Mental Skills Coordinator for the minor league program, and Dr. Sinclair is a registered psychologist who has served as a consultant for many business organizations and professional sport franchises. Her previous client list of teams included the Montreal Alouettes, Anaheim Ducks, Indianapolis Colts, Boston Red Sox and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Dr. Sinclair has worked with a number of Olympic teams as a sport’s psychologist in the Nagano, Sydney and Salt Lake City games. She received her PhD from the University of Cambridge in the Field Of Study Experimental Psychology.

The Nats’ minor league system finally has a Nutritionist with the hiring of Emily Kaley from the Mets. She was formerly the Performance Nutrition Coordinator for the Mets and before that was the Cubs – Class A South Bend Performance Dietitian. Kaley has a Masters’ degree in Sports Nutrition from the University of Colorado.

One of the names who might sound familiar is Watson’s hire of Dave Jauss. He was the bench coach last year for the Mets and the HR Derby pitcher for Pete Alonso. The multi-talented Jauss is also the father of D.J. Jauss who was once a minor leaguer for the Nats, drafted by the Nationals 874th overall, in the 29th round of the 2014 MLB draft. Jauss has other ties to the organization and in 1988, Jauss was hired by field coordinator Jerry Manuel as a manager in the Expos’ farm system. Between 1988 and 1994, Jauss managed the Gulf Coast Expos, West Palm Beach Expos, and the Double-A Harrisburg Senators. Now, he will fill the role of Senior Advisor of Player Development under Watson. Of course, there are many other stories to go with each new hire, and we will cover those in the future.
