The Washington Nationals had a must-win series set to dominate the last place Orioles this weekend, and the reverse happened. The Nats are done with Baltimore this season after this game goes final. The Nats swept the O’s in D.C. and this series in Baltimore has the Nats in an 0-2 hole with the salvage game today.
The only reason the Nats are still in the playoff hunt in the NL East is because no team has run away with it. The Nats are 7.0 games back at the moment. But most signs point to selling after the Nats went from a 3-game winning streak to the other extreme of a 3-game losing streak that started on Wednesday against the Marlins.
So now Paolo Espino will take the mound as the stopper. Of all the pitchers to face, the Nats get the O’s ace, John Means, today. He just came off of the IL five days ago and was hit hard in that game.
It’s baseball, so who knows what’s going to happen. The Nats will play this game amidst swirling rumors of an impending sell-off. The last time the Nats sold-off in 2018 and watched Bryce Harper ceremoniously leave for free agency, the Nats were given little chance the following season. What did the Nats do? Just underdog their way to a World Series win.
