Nats win 2-of-3 of the opening series; lose the finale in the bullpen

The Nationals lose a tough game in 10 innings. The Nationals were 1-for-9 with runners-in-scoring-position tonight in a game delayed by two rain storms, but the Nationals still held a 2-0 lead into the 8th inning. Gio Gonzalez went 6 innings of shutout baseball and got big plays when he needed it as he did not have a clean inning.

Here is what the pitcher’s box score looked like:

“You have to give those guys credit as they hit the best of our bullpen,” Dusty Baker said after the game. “I love my bullpen. They are going to be one of the best if they are not already.”

Kevin Nibley and Bryan King had perfect timing to cover the bullpen on the Talk Nats Podcast as they interviewed former Nats catcher Wil Nieves and pitcher Mike O’Connor and Sammy Solis‘ sisters. The link to the Podcast is here.

We saw both Shawn Kelley and Blake Treinen charged with blown saves tonight and Joe Blanton took the loss. It was Shawn Kelley who gave up the two-run home run to Realmuto in the 8th inning. Treinen relieved Sammy Solis and gave up a 2-strike game tying single on a missed location to Tyler Moore. The Marlins won it in the 10th on a double by Justin Bour off of Joe Blanton.

Ryan Zimmerman was the offensive star tonight along with Adam Eaton and Jayson Werth as they all had home runs. Daniel Murphy had 2-hits on the night. All the Nats runs came on home runs and too many RISP spots were squandered.
