The Nationals lost 7-4 and in the 4th inning the Nats took a 4 run deficit and tied the game up, but the Nats bullpen couldn’t keep it close while the Nats offense did nothing after the 4th inning.
The Marlins scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning both on unearned runs from an error on the middle infielders as neither seemed to call for a popup and then Lobaton had a passed ball.
Add to that several failed RISP situations where the Nationals did not capitalize. The Nats wasted another great game by Trea Turner who went 2-3 with a triple, single, walk, 2 stolen bases including 1 RBI, and he added a Web Gem on a great diving catch in centerfield.
Anthony Rendon and Stephen Drew both added home runs in the game. With Rendon’s 20th home run of the season, the Nationals now have six players with 20 home runs which makes them the 6th team in history to do that. Those players are Harper, Murphy, Ramos, Werth, Espinosa and Rendon.
Jayson Werth left the game early and he was 0-3. Bryce Harper was 0-4 with 4 strikeouts, and Danny Espinosa was 0-4 and his hitless streak is now at 0-22. The most distressing point as mentioned was that the Nats did not score beyond the 4th inning, and the Marlins’ bullpen took over for the final 5 innings and struck out 10 of the final 16 batters and the only batter who got on base was Clint Robinson in the 9th inning with a walk.
The Marlins scored the 7 runs without Giancarlo Stanton. Also keep in mind that the Marlins are the fourth worst offense in the Major Leagues.
Dusty Baker said in his post-game presser that Jayson Werth was removed from the game with some tightness in his back.
Trea Turner has joined the 10/30 Club with his first stolen base tonight, and he became the 4th member of that club to do it in less than 100 games!
