The Nats begin this 4 game home series against the Fish and they are projecting Cosart as their starter to face Tanner Roark. The Nats certainly are familiar with Cosart who they just faced in Miami on Friday while Roark pitched on Saturday.
Cosart got a no-decision in that game going 5 innings and giving up no runs; however, he took advantage of the cavernous outfield in Miami to his advantage,. Cosart is a Jekyll and Hyde type of pitcher when he heads on the road. At Home he has a 1.93 ERA vs 8.46 on the Road and that’s not a typo.
Cosart if you remember was in trouble in the 1st inning with a lead-off walk to Werth to start the game and a walk to Bryce Harper but then worked out of it. It was a good chance to jump on Cosart early although he made it interesting starting the 2nd inning with a leadoff single to Ramos. In the 4th inning he gave up a leadoff single to Escobar but then coaxed a doubleplay on Desi and then gave up a 2 out single to Ramos and worked around that. In the 5th, he lucked out on a TyMo hard lineout right to Yelich then walked Gio Gonzalez and then a single to Werth but worked out of that jam with a strikeout of Bryce Harper.
Roark who is back in the starting rotation gets to show the home crowd what he can do in 2016 if the Nats put him back permanently in the starting rotation. This is a big outing for Tanner.
Jarred Cosart is a pitcher who throws his cut-fastball as his primary pitch and lives and dies by it and he can put some velo on it which makes him unique as it will travel at speeds of 94mph to 97+. He throws it usually about 60% of the time and his knuckle curveball is his only breaking pitch which he throws about 25% of the time 80mph and then he mixes in a few sinkers and changeups. He likes to pitch on the outside and don’t expect many pitches inside. You beat him by going oppo.
Jayson Werth hits Cosart at .625 with a HR, and Ramos hits him at .600 and RZim at .400. Desi has a .455 OBP as he has some hits and 3 walks against Cosart. Rendon and Esco have the most career at-bats against him of any Nats and neither have done well against him but Tony 2 Bags has 2 career hits against Cosart and 1 of them is a Tony FOUR-bags.
Lineups are:
