Game #95 Rutledge gets another chance

The Washington Nationals are about 48-hours before the 2024 MLB Draft, and on the mound in a call-up today is Jackson Rutledge, the team’s first rounder from the 2019 draft. Just two days ago, Don H. was wondering if Rutledge should be shifted to the bullpen. Well, Rutledge will get another opportunity after his dismal 2024 season and a 6.66 ERA in Triple-A Rochester to show he still can be an MLB starter.

Manager Dave Martinez used Kyle Finnegan and Hunter Harvey yesterday since both needed the work, as neither had pitched in the previous 5-days. Robert Garcia and Dylan Floro covered the other innings. Prior to yesterday, Jordan Weems covered two innings and 39-pitches in the Mets series, and Jacob Barnes also pitched 25-pitches. To make room on the roster for Rutledge, Adon was sent back to Triple-A Rochester. Neither Adon or Rainey was used in the Mets series.

The Nationals are the huge betting underdogs today, at +220 to win on the moneyline. That means if you bet $100 you would win $220. Bet $10 and you win $22.

After this game, the Nationals will fly to Milwaukee for their final series before the All-Star break. Time is flying by and after today there are just 68-games remaining in the season. The Nats have just just 3-games after today’s game in this marathon of 17-games in a row. The team will have played 97-games before the All-Star break, and that leaves just 65-games after the All-Star break.

This is what the Nats schedule looks like going forward:

  1. Friday: Jackson Rutledge vs. Brewers
  2. Saturday: Mitchell Parker vs. Brewers (All-Star Futures’ Game)
  3. Sunday: Jake Irvin vs. Brewers (MLB Draft)
  4. All-Star Break (HR Derby)
  5. All-Star Break (All-Star Game)
  6. All-Star Break
  7. All-Star Break
  8. Friday: TBA vs. Reds – July 19
  9. Saturday: TBA vs. Reds
  10. Sunday: TBA vs. Reds

Your top Washington Nationals on the FanGraphs’ WAR leaderboard has CJ Abrams on the top at +2.1 for position players and the team’s All-Star. He behind MacKenzie Gore at +2.4. Jake Irvin is at +2.1. Jacob Young is at +1.7 as the second best position player. In total, 22 Nats’ players are in positive WAR and another six are at a neutral 0.0 WAR.

“Not good — you saw the game. It’s not good. We’ve got to clean that up. We can’t beat ourselves, and today we beat ourselves a little bit.”

— Nats’ manager Davey Martinez said after Monday’s game and just keep that on repeat
